The Pressure Cooker: Why Big Emotions Show Up in the Body

by Sinéad Hurley

We’ve all been there: the school run is looming, and suddenly your child has a “mysterious” tummy ache. Or perhaps, after a weekend of suppressed frustration, you notice a patch of eczema flaring up on your own arm.

In my work as a homeopath, I often see households that feel like a pressure cooker. When emotions like anxiety, anger, or overwhelm don’t have a safe outlet, they don’t just vanish. They go looking for a “vent.”

The Mind-Body Connection is Real

For adults and children the nervous system is often dialed up to a high frequency. When an emotion feels too “big” to process verbally, the body takes the hit.

This is why we see:

The “Monday Morning” Tummy: Often a physical manifestation of anticipatory anxiety.

Skin Flares: Anger or “heat” that has nowhere to go often surfaces through the skin.

The Tablet Meltdown: This isn’t just about the screen; it’s often a nervous system crash after a period of intense focus and sensory input.

Is it a Passing Cloud or a Constitutional Nudge?

One of the most common questions I get is: “When do I just wait it out, and when do I need help?”

Passing Through: If an outburst happens, but the person returns to their “baseline” relatively quickly and the physical symptoms disappear once the stressor is gone, the body is likely processing the emotion naturally.

The Constitutional Nudge: If your child (or you) seems “stuck” in a pattern—like chronic IBS every time there is a change in routine, or a recurring behavioral “loop” they can’t break out of—this is where homeopathy shines. We look for the remedy that matches that specific “stuck” energy to help the system reset.

From Chaos to Connection

The goal isn’t to stop the big emotions—it’s to learn how to ride the wave without the boat capsizing. When we understand that a skin flare or a tantrum is a signal from the nervous system, we can stop reacting to the “symptom” and start connecting with the person.
