From Busy to Barefoot: A Natural Shift Into Holiday Rhythm
by Sinéad Hurley
Transitioning from Work to Holiday Mode – Why It’s Harder Than It Sounds (and How to Make It Easier)
The out-of-office reply is on. The suitcase is packed. You’ve waited months for this break — but instead of feeling instantly relaxed, you’re… tense, scattered, or a little lost.
Sound familiar?

For many of us, shifting from work mode to holiday mode isn’t an immediate switch. It’s a process — and one that can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. Whether you’re heading to a quiet caravan, a beach abroad, or simply staying home, letting go of the work mindset takes more than just time off.
Why Transitions Feel So Unsettling
Our nervous systems thrive on rhythm and familiarity. When you go from the structure of work — with its meetings, tasks, and to-do lists — to the open, unstructured space of holiday time, the lack of routine can leave you feeling ungrounded or restless.
You may even find yourself recreating the stress: reorganising cupboards, micromanaging your family, or struggling to sit still. That’s not failure. It’s your system trying to recalibrate.
Gentle Ways to Support the Shift
Here are a few simple strategies to help your mind and body settle into the slower pace:
1. Create a Light Rhythm
Rather than ditching all structure, try creating soft anchors to your day — a morning walk, shared meals, a quiet moment with a book or tea. These give your day shape without pressure.
2. Don’t Expect Instant Relaxation
It can take a few days to properly wind down. Be kind to yourself. The brain doesn’t stop spinning just because the emails do.
3. Do Less to Enjoy More
If you feel the urge to fill your time, pause and ask: “Do I want to do this, or do I feel like I should?” The real magic of holidays often happens in the white space.
4. Let Go of Perfection
Holidays don’t have to be picture-perfect. If the weather’s bad, the kids are bickering, or you’re still thinking about work — that’s okay. Focus on moments, not outcomes.
Nux Vomica
For the wired-but-exhausted type.
Nux Vomica is a brilliant remedy for those coming off a high-stress cycle. You’ve been running on adrenaline — ticking boxes, managing tasks, solving problems — and now your system doesn’t know how to slow down.
You may notice:
- Irritability or short temper (especially when interrupted)
- Wakefulness in the early hours, with a racing mind
- Sensitivity to light, noise, or smells
- Feeling frustrated that you “should” be relaxing but aren’t
This remedy helps the body and mind begin to decompress, making it easier to move from constant drive into calm.
2. Gelsemium
For emotional fatigue or mental shutdown.
Gelsemium is ideal when the idea of relaxing actually feels overwhelming. You may feel mentally dull, heavy-limbed, and slow to get going. It’s as though your system hits pause the moment the pressure lifts.
You may notice:
- Fatigue as soon as the break begins
- A sense of dread or overwhelm about unstructured time
- Wanting to withdraw or be quiet
- A foggy head or trouble making decisions
This remedy supports gentle re-engagement with the present moment, helping restore clarity and energy without pressure.
3. Ignatia
For emotional tension and mood swings.
Ignatia is especially helpful when you’re feeling a little off emotionally, even though everything around you is “supposed” to be perfect. You might swing between laughter and tears, feel easily disappointed, or have a knot of tension in your chest or throat.
You may notice:
- A sense of internal pressure or frustration
- Tearfulness or sudden mood dips
- Difficulty expressing how you feel
- Holding in emotions or sighing frequently
Ignatia helps bring emotional release and relief — supporting a more peaceful, grounded state as you settle into rest.
