Recovering from a Caesarean Section: Homeopathy for Post-Surgery Healing
by Sinéad Hurley
First let’s clearly identify exactly what we are talking about here. A caesarean section, also known as C-section, caesarean, or caesarean delivery, is the surgical procedure by which one or more babies are delivered through an incision in the mother’s abdomen.
Having had three children all by C-section and only having the luxury of using homeopathic remedies on the 3rd section, I have first-hand experience of the difference in healing with homeopathic remedies and without.
I clearly remember the 1st day after my 3rd c-section – I was up and out and managed to shower myself (something I couldn’t do after 1st section). I walked the corridors of the hospital without the need to stoop. Nurses were wondering what it was I was taking as they could visibly see the difference in my healing.
Post birth is busy – post birth after a C-Section is a very different situation. You have had major surgery; any other major surgery would involve weeks of rest, but after having a baby – you have a new human being to nurture and support and sometimes your self-care can take a back seat.
If you want to support your birth experience naturally I highly recommend a Childbirth kit. This kit has 18 remedies that come in 200c potency – ideal to support the Mum and Baby, before, during and after birth. It contains the remedies I’ve mentioned below, a compact handbook and remedies are in glass vials in a durable case.
Let’s not forget, this is a major operation that carries a number of risks – where an incision is made into layers of tissue just above the bikini line, in order to safely deliver one or more babies. It goes without saying that care must be taken to aid healing after this operation. As a professional homeopath I would always recommend ARNICA after birth, no matter how the baby was delivered, Arnica should be taken.
Arnica: An indispensable remedy that can be given AFTER surgery to reduce the bruised feeling. Shock, bruising and haemorrhage are its three main spheres of action.
To work on healing from the inside out, healing the layers of tissue that have been cut I would recommend Bellis Perennis
Bellis Perennis: Bruised, sore, aching pain. This remedy follows on after arnica where there has been surgery involving deep tissue.
The final step – once stitches or staples have been removed or dissolved I would advice the use of Calendula to support the final stages of healing.
Calendula : This is a remedy used for healing. I would advice that you start using this when you get home.
Ideally these remedies should be given under the guidance of a qualified homeopathy.
I always advice my clients to be prepared prior to birth – I offer my clients a “Preparation for Birth” Consultation – where I take them through the various remedies to support before, during and after birth. Also discussing the challenges that may arise when breast feeding and how to support your body naturally using homeopathy.
