A case of CHRONIC MIGRAINES

by Sinéad Hurley

In the early days of my practice I remember treating a young lady for chronic migraines.  This girl was really at her wits end.  As I say – I was her “last change saloon”!

So this was her story……….

Headaches started 3 – 3½ years ago.  Had a car accident 4 yrs ago.  The car was going at high speed and crashed with sudden impact.  She received neck & back injuries.  Had physiotherapy afterwards which helped.  The headaches weren’t so strong to begin with – maybe once a month – and they could happen around the time of her period.  By 2008 the headaches were there all the time.  In Jan of 2008 she spent one month eating nothing but rice as there was nothing else, she could keep down.  She was worse for smell and sight of food.

About 3 – 4hrs before a headache she would feel dizzy, couldn’t eat and would feel a small bit nauseous.  The pain can start at the base of the neck but will always be on one side – not always the same side.  The pain is sharp worse for slight movement, worse for noise, worse for light.  She can’t take any conventional medication as it makes her vomit. She is better for cold application and better for tying scarf around the head.  Usually takes 4 hrs of intense pain before she gets relief and she can them move. She can only eat something light afterwards like rice cakes. She described the pain like “putting a knife into something and turning it” Head feels very heavy.

“I hate winter, seem to get headaches more in the winter although this summer I’ve had a lot of them but the weather has been damp and that makes it worse” When I go home (not from Ireland) and the weather is nice my headaches are much better.

Last week I only worked 1 day – the pain was so bad and the weather last week was damp.  3yrs ago the headaches only came around period time now they can come anytime.  Before I used to get them in the mornings now, I can wake up at night with a headache.

I’ve collapsed at work 2 times and once at home in the last 2-3yrs.  Don’t hear anything I’m totally out.  Haven’t injured myself during any of these occasions.

I have the pain in my head all the time, can’t concentrate, feel tired faster – don’t watch tv or read much.

Prognosis without treatment

Without homeopathic treatment her health was likely to worsen.  She has been told by Dr.’s that she will have to live with these headaches but at this stage they are already affecting her work and if they continue it could well mean that she may lose her job and remain unemployable.  Prior to the accident this girl used hold down two jobs – loved working under pressure and was a very happy carefree person.  I feel that if she was to lose her job that it could well lead to depression.

PRESCRIPTION: I prescribed this lady Natrum Sulph to be taken on the day she was with me and the following day.   I also prescribed an acute remedy (Bryonia) to take in the event of the headache returning.

ONE MONTH LATER, this is what client had to say……………..

“I had one headache this month – and it wasn’t like what I would usually get (migraine) it was more like a normal headache.  I took the Bryonia about 3 times and the headache was gone the following day.  I feel absolutely brilliant – there’s a massive change in my life, to be honest I’m shocked”

This lady continued to improve. Any time I met her socially she was always thanking me for my help. I contacted her to get her permission to share this case and she is still migraine free and life is good!

Obviously, the remedies prescribed were individual to this case.  With homeopathy each prescription is individual – it is not a case of one prescription fits all.
